The Copper Current

A sunset current turned the whole river bronze, and only a handmade spoon could read its shape.

The river looked ordinary from the ridge. Down in the narrows it became a fast, bronze-coloured ribbon that pulled leaves, shadows and misplaced confidence in the same direction.

The current had a pattern

Mira launched upstream of the narrows and kept one hand close to the oar. The flow looked wild, but it repeated itself: a fast outer seam, a soft eddy behind each rock, then a clear lane that opened for only a few seconds.

She tied on an old copper spoon lure that had been dulled by a hundred quiet casts. The metal did not shine much. It simply turned over in the water with the sort of stubborn rhythm the current seemed willing to respect.

Ride, do not wrestle

The first drift rushed past too quickly. The second caught the soft lane. Mira let the spoon ride lower than usual, watching the line bow and straighten between the rocks. A school of tiny glowing fish gathered under the boat, all of them facing upstream.

When the strike came, it was more a weight than a jolt. The fish used the copper water to pull wide, then tucked into an eddy exactly where Mira had hoped it would. The fight was short but full of decisions, which is the kind Mira liked best.

A river that keeps moving

After the release, the bronze colour slowly broke apart as the sun fell behind the cliff. The current became water again, though Mira knew it had never stopped being a lesson.

She put the spoon back in the tin without polishing it. Some tools earn their marks. Some rivers do too.

“Current is not an argument. It is a sentence you learn to read.”

Back at the map table, Mira added one small mark to the page, dried the gear and left the next question for another morning. The Driftglass Delta was never short of clues. It only asked that people make space to notice them.
